Hi,

I interrupted the upgrade from gutsy to hardy when it was downloading 500 megs of additional files. Now I can not boot gutsy. When I boot in the 'safe' mode I get a command prompt but the command startx crashes the machine.

Has anyone got any suggestions how I get ubuntu back without losing all my data?

Thanks

Hi!

I don't know if the upgrade can be rolled back or not, but in the worst case you could copy all your data to a safe location (eg. pendrive or DVD) and then just reinstall Ubuntu.

try sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and hopefuly your upgrade will continue.
note if already root you can omit sudo
