View Full Version : [ubuntu] Increased memory usage after 8.04 upgrade

Hi,

I'm using a fairly old laptop with a pitiful 512M of memory. Gutsy seemed to be using about 250M of that after a fresh reboot, Hardy seems to take up most of it, leaving me about 10M free!

This isn't so much a complaint (i.e. so please don't just tell me to buy more memory and quit whining), more a query as to what has caused the increased memory usage and pointers as to what I can do about it (i.e. some memory hogging things that are safe to remove)? I use fluxbox rather than the standard ubuntu desktop, so I don't mind losing things to do with that.

I've removed compiz & and tracker, which seemed to free up a good chunk of memory.

Apologies if this is an ignorant question, but more generally how do I tell where my memory is being used? Everything tells me to look at `free` and `ps aux` but that doesn't seem to show me everything (i.e. there was no reference to compiz, but after doing aptitude remove compiz my free memory rose).

TIA,
Roland
