I was running 7.10 on my laptop, and yesterday I upgraded (using the update manager) to 8.04. After I rebooted for the upgrade to finish, I have been unable to get to the graphical login screen, or access my desktop. All I get is the orange-ish background and the "busy" mouse cursor that never goes away.

I can, however, press CTRL+ALT+F1, and log in from that terminal fine.

I have tried doing "sudo init 1" and running the fix X thing, and that didn't make any difference. I have also tried renaming Xorg.conf to Xorg.conf.disabled, and that didn't help either.

Mastergamer, perhaps it is worth trying:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
Make sure you have a back-up of your xorg.conf file first.

Cheers, Pat
