With all the "events" that have occurred in the last week or so I think that XP on the OLPC is a foregone conclusion. Bodies exiting at high speed only make it more probable!!

the OLPC is a great idea, and has lead to a host of new innovations that are becoming the norm in most of the low cost laptops available today. but the OLPC has constantly been pressurised by multi-nationals who only see the 'profit' line in such a mass deployment of equipment, Intel tried to sabotage the OLPC, now it looks like Microsoft are trying to do the same. These companies are not interested in the philantrophic side of the OLPC, they are only interested in margins. The OLPC has a perfectly good OS, designed from the start with the specifications required.

the OLPC is a non-profit organisation. if MS forces itself on board, it will be a non-profit, apart from MS. even if MS are suppying XP for $3, or whatever. This price will undoubtedly rise in the future. I hope the OLPC has nothing to do with MS, but I fear it is too late!

In a word, and very sadly no. Since the ISO's decision to adopt OOXML (OpenOffice XML - Irony bleeds from that description), Microsoft has yet again nailed it colours to the mast and proclaimed that NO ONE will leverage any foothold in any market.

I can see the OLPC project descend into farce from this point on. It's clear that they didn't have a roadmap that would account for this and as such, weren't aware of the obvious influence that Microsoft and Intel would push to get thier way.
