x86.

What does that mean? didn't it start with 86 then 186 and 286 and 386 and 486 (I had one of those)... now its x86. What does that mean? Does that mean pentium 4 is a 1286 or something?

I would say that it means that it works on any 86 system, such as 386 586 and so forth.

I'm guessing x is supposed to be variable, so it could mean any of the '86 archs, from 086 - 686.
Since they are so similar, programs usualy work on all of them.

Fascinating. I didn't know that there was a 186.
