How does gdm set path

I was running kubuntu, but decided to switch over to ubuntu by removing all the kde packages and installing gnome ones. This includes replacing kdm with gdm.

When I start a terminal session and bash starts, its is looking like it has run ~/.bashrc, but not ~/.bash_profile, mainly because my PATH environment does not include ~/bin (which is set in .bash_profile)

This worked in the kde environment and I ran konsole

Is there a preferred way to get gdm to set the path to include ~/bin ?
