I've actually never tried it before. I just had a go now and it was harder than I thought it would be, took a few goes to beat. Definitely possible though, just need to make sure that when board fills up its the computer who is forced to set you up and not vice versa

Well, I have never beaten it, but, annoyingly and embarrasingly, my 10 year old son has :-(

And my 13 year old daughter can do the rubic's cube (I can't)

I feel sooooo inadequate!

I've beaten it once. however you play it, the computer always seems to get the winning move with about 3 spaces left. I was insanely happy for the whole day when I won.

I just had a go - beaten in the first try with a 5-in-a-row... The AI's really, really stupid.

Yeah, I've found it pretty much impossible to beat even the easiest AI at that game...

I thought I was the only one who had trouble winning this game. I gave up on playing it after a weekend of playing it...

Yeah even with Mazza's advice I get either a draw or I lose.
Perhaps my brain is working the wrong way...maybe I should try to lose!

scragar
April 29th, 2008, 11:17 PM
trying to lose is very easy, but I have to say the draw was my first time with AI first, whenever I went first the AI would win.

maybe AI should be crippled when your going first, try and even that out.

when did the AI start playing 5 in a row?

sorry for the double post, this happened right after I posted and I can't appear to add attachments to a post I've already made, or I would do that.

I played this game 100 times in a row before I gave up and used the hints.

I guess that really doesn't count because I let the computer make all the choices for me. I feared the day such a thing would happen... hopefully it won't become self-aware and try to launch Skynet.

I beat the game. . .and this is my second day to try. . ive played it about 50 times though

and i didnt use any type of trick or hints or anything like that. . (but i didnt think that I was ever going to beat it)

ur such a lier! u didnt beat that

1. it says u win! in the bottom left hand corner of the window when you actually win

2. it looks like you just stretched out the row and added another marble.
(idk how you did that but thats what the picture shows..)

my advice. . .stop bn lame

This game cheats... i used its hints to see if I'd win, so the whole game I used the hints, so essentially it was facing itself...and i STILL lost...like seriously wtf :(

Hey, I wasn't playing against the AI, I was forcing it to play against itself(which is why it says red or blue wins rather than you win), thought I might get a better idea of how to beat it if I watched it beat itself a few times.

I've never had it happen again, but I really didn't cheat, the game just put down two instead of one when it won. I just thought it'd be funny to point it out.

I played on the highest level. Yowza. If he goes first, it's almost impossible to win. We usually go right into the end-game and I'm forced to give him victory because there is nowhere else left to go. When I start, the same thing usually happens (although he manages to get a draw a lot of the time!). How are you people managing to trick the AI?

I won in that game like 3 or 4 times, but I lost 27 times or more.

It is hard :)

Just got 4 in a row again after about 12 tries... thats like 4 times in 3 years lol. Not that I play it daily but still I play it enough for that statement to be sad. ;)

I just find the trick(after being beaten by the exact way ;)) to win the game, that is building a two three-in-a-row,that the other two which are needed by the former two three-in-a-row are neighbors in a vertical row.
Searching to find more ways to beat the computer....

yeah lol it was beaten by a C program written by some genius, that doesn't mean it isn't ridiculously difficult!! My ti-83 can do trigonometry also.

That's the problem with open-source games - you can open them up and study the source code to find vulnerabilities in the AI :-P

Or just modify the source code to short-circuit the AI into making dumb moves!

Using Four-in-a-row 2.26.1 (Ubuntu 9.04), computer as blue on level 1. You will always win if you do the following:

X = Red (human player, goes first)
O = Blue (computer player, goes second)

Turn 1:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | |O| | | |
| | | |X| | | |
===============

Turn 2:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | |X| | | |
| | | |O| | | |
| | | |X|O| | |
===============

Turn 3:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | |X| | | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| | | |X|O|O| |
===============

Turn 4:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | |O| | | |
| | | |X|X| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| | | |X|O|O| |
===============

Turn 5:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | |O| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| | | |X|X| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| | | |X|O|O| |
===============

Turn 6:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | |O| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| | | |X|X| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
|O|X| |X|O|O| |
===============

Turn 7:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | |O| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| | | |X|X| | |
|X|O| |O|X| | |
|O|X| |X|O|O| |
===============

Turn 8:
| | | | |O| | |
| | | | |O| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| |X| |X|X| | |
|X|O| |O|X| | |
|O|X| |X|O|O| |
===============

Turn 9:
| | | | |O| | |
| | | | |O| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| |X| |X|X| | |
|X|O|O|O|X| | |
|O|X|X|X|O|O| |
===============

Turn 10:
| | | | |O| | |
| | | | |O| | |
| | | |O|X| | |
| |X|X|X|X| | | <-- Human player wins
|X|O|O|O|X| | |
|O|X|X|X|O|O| |
===============

The play may be flipped left/right, but I have played this exact same game many times. The AI on level-2 always falls for this trap.

The best I've ever done is tie with a level three AI.
