I upgraded to hardy and users and groups has lost my user accounts i can still login to these accounts but can't change them from users and groups. The only account listed is root.I'd rather not delete these users and recreate them if at all possible. any ideas?

Try this one, maybe it could help:
sudo adduser
then input the username you had been using.

adduser: The user `xxxxx' already exists.
if i do this from within the gui tool it complains the same way.

I have a similar problem... I can't modify files or group permissions they tell me I'm not the owner or aren't accessible.
