hi all

i did a fresh hardy install. everything went great, but while tweaking with something (vlc i think) i really screwed up. for some reason i seem to have tried to install the following package:

linux-backports-modules-2.6.22-14-generic

now synaptic says it has broken dependencies, and i can't uninstall it or do anything with it. when i try to uninstall it either manually or through synaptic i get the following:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
linux-backports-modules-2.6.22-14-generic
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 6 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 6128kB disk space will be freed.

also, when i open "add/remove, i get the following message:

Failed to check for installed and available applications

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

any help would be greatly appreciated.(by the way, everything else runs great).

type the following to remove unnecessary modules:

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean

Then install packages that have not been installed correctly with the switch -f

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f

Do a normal update and upgrade:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Do an autoremove and an autoclean again if you want. Let me know how it went.

can you also post the content of the file "/etc/apt/sources.list"

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

thanks. autoclean did nothing apparent:

sudo apt-get autoclean

with autoremove i get the same message as before, i.e.:

sudo apt-get autoremove

i just noticed that this is the description of the problematic modules package in synaptic:

Ubuntu supplied Linux modules for version 2.6.22 on x86/x86_64
This package contains modules supplied by Ubuntu for Linux kernel 2.6.22 on
x86/x86_64.

You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install
the linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work
correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed.

is this for a 64-bit? i'm on i386.
