Just trying to install Ubuntu 7.10 on an old, Compaq Presario 7470.
Some stats:
AMD-K6 "3d" processor (533Mhz, IIRC)
504Mb RAM (guessing the other 8Mb is being eaten by onboard video, despite PCI graphics card)
~17Gb HDD.
Has Windows ME installed (bleagh.)
If I can get past "Start or Install Ubuntu" without it restarting, it shows the Ubuntu logo/loading bar, with the 'back and forth' bar, and then after a few minutes, the screen goes blank at it sits there with a white cursor blinking at the upper left. (it's not Terminal.)
I'm thinking maybe it's the motherboard, because I installed the exact same copy on a '98 eMachines eMonster 500a (with 384Mb RAM and a slot-type Pentium 3 500Mhz processor. 30Gb HDD.)
I'll try to post more info, if needed.
