View Full Version : [ubuntu] Serious Hardy System Hangs!

Hi All,

So far the Hardy installation hasn't been too big of a trouble, minus some grub errors which weren't too difficult, the fact that none of my users were transferred from existing systems, and that multiheading is not yet operational but I digress... This is the main error:

Serious hangs. Sometimes nothing works, but sometimes the mouse works, but GDM doesn't respond, and the keyboard doesn't work, so no ctrl+alt+backspace. The TTY hotkeys are also not working in general which is very odd, and the keyboard and mouse are both USB so I don't understand why one would work and the other wouldn't. I don't have to be doing anything for it to hang, and it often happens in the middle of the night. I haven't been able to figure out what's been causing it in the logs, but here they are:

Sorry, that's a lot of logs, but note that somehow the time went from a mark at 6:31 am to the next log being at 3:04am... strange no? I didn't reset it either, this must have been a crash, and then somehow it hung again after resetting within a matter of minutes. I didn't notice it until 10:38am according to the logs... but I'm sure I reset it at 9:00am this morning, and the GDM shows me the correct time... really odd, no?

ANY ideas would be nice. I've already added the dhcdbd bug to the existing bug report in Launchpad, and I've disable bluetooth at start, but so far no luck. Also, this is a fresh install, not upgrade.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

There was this bug about keyboard and mouse don't responding after resuming from suspend. It happened 20% of the times only.
The old solution was to add some scripts binding and unbinding one module but it doesnt work on hardy now and I read that it's because they use /etc/pm scripts instead of the acpi ones.
There is related information here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/83243

I don't think that's the problem as my computer doesn't suspend... it's a desktop and I leave it running 24/7. Thanks for the suggestion!

In the same boat here... Question - we've got syslog facilites all over the place here - would it make sense to push my syslogs out to a network based syslog server? I don't know if the nic hangs, but the hdd certainly isn't writing new log entries after a certain point and prior to the "syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart." entry. I'm thinking maybe it'll capture more log entries even if hdd write activity is hung.

That may help for sure - I know I've attempted to connect to my computer via the network (FTP) while it's been hung and it connects, but you just can't do anything like login... so I think the NIC works but it cant't do anything after that. I wish there was just an easy way of core-dumping or something... argh!

Same thing here. It is extremely annoying.
I think it is a problem with gdm as when I do a shutdown after the keyboard hangs I get message saying gdm went to segfault and error 4, whatever it means.

Just wanted to chime in the same (if not a very similar issue). My can hang at several points:

1. When I am attempting to log in I get a black screen with mouse but will not complete the log in no matter how long let it sit for. My keyboard does respond so I do <alt-ctl-f2> log in and restart GDM which generally resets my log in screen. I can then attempt the log in again.

I have found that the log in often more successful if I choose my session before logging in, rather than letting it go with the default.

2. Sometimes after I restart GDM I get a blank screen, X for the mouse cursor (which is movable) but no response from anything else including the keyboard. At this point I have to hit the power button and let it shutdown (sometimes the system responds to the powerbutton and will shutdown, other times I have to hold in the power button.)

3. In the middle of a Gnome or XFCE session I will experience a hang. Same as above only difference is I don't get a blank screen, the background stays but inputs are not recognized.

Alright that's all for now. I tend to agree that it's GDM, but part of me thinks it's something other. I'll post Log's when I get a chance.

OK, after setting up syslog to forward - no hang overnight... First time in 4 or 5 consecutive nights it HASN'T paniced.

One change I made that might be of significance - changed from xscreensaver "pyro" to blank screen only - perhaps not working the cpu too hard overnight prevented it from doing the nasty?

I'm going to leave it logging to network syslog host, change screensavers to a complex one, then leave for lunch, see what happens. It usually has taken overnight to panic, so if it doesn't, I'll leave it in that config over the weekend and post back Monday w/results.

Yeah, the screen saver is definitely not it for me... I don't have one at all. I'm starting to suspect it might have something to do with the system's handling of the network... maybe because of roaming mode or DHCP requests? Not sure. How did you set up the external logging? I'm not aware of how that's done. Cheers!

Locked / paniced over the weekend, appears to have been as early as Friday 10PM - at least that's the last syslog msg it forwarded - and it was a --MARK--. Dangit.

Following some more research, I updated my kernel to 2.6.24-17-generic (added Hardy Proposed repos in Synaptic, ran an apt-get update, off we went) and this box didnt hang last night for the first time since I clean-installed Xubuntu Beta.

We'll see if this issue has been truly resovled in 2.6.24-17, but so far so good. FWIW, I'm on Xubuntu 64bit on an (Intel) Core2Duo Dell Optiplex 755 w/full hardware virtualization enabled in the BIOS.

I am using a toshiba a215-27422 laptop and I get these system hangs as well; I will open an application such as gnome-terminal and the system will become unresponsive, the same happens with opening links, etc.

Help is appreciated.

I think it had something to do with my internet... wifi specifically. I'm using madwifi-ng, and since i turned it off I haven't frozen. Anyone else?

Does anyone know what the final resolution to this issue is?

I have the same output in my messages and syslog.

Anyhooo,
I come down in the morning to find my system hung and with just a blank logon box on the screen, of course I cannot logon.

I can however alt+ctrl+backspace and kill X and then start a new session.

I was suspecting pulseaudio was the culprit.

Any help would be great, I too run the 24/7 desktop and find this a wee bit annoying.

I think there are two separate problems in this thread right now. Mine definitely does not have to do with pulse audio, and results in a system hang that is NOT responsive to keyboard or mouse. My theory is still something to do with WPAsupplicant and the Madwifi-ng driver. Does anyone else have this specific setup? Why I think that the supplicant is to blame: this happened this morning.

arggg. I've been having the same problem! My computer lock ups up almost every other day, always when using either firefox ( I've tried 2, 3 beta 5 and 3 rc2 now ). Firefox or rythmbox goes grey and within a minute I'm hard locked. no keyboard, mouse. ick. these are the only entries in any log right before it locks up.

Has anyone found a fix for this?

i think its just a general problem with 8.04 since my box hangs like crazy and im using kubuntu. at first i thought it was somthing to do with compiz/new nvidia driver/superkaramba because it only seemed to happen when i had a lot of widgets open and most were hidden by compiz and ram usage was >=1GB (i have 2gb) i had xconfig rewrite a basic xconfig file and i thought that seemed to fix it, wrong, it froze again when the ram was only at ~700mb and i was using kwin and not compiz. Ive also tried both 24-16,17 and 18 and none of them seem to have any effect on them. I seem to think its either a problem with the xserver or 8.04 in general. i was thinking it might have been kde related by as i see most of you are running gnome so we can rule out the DEs.

I agree that there seems to be multiple issues going on, and unfortunately, I think I've had a taste of them all :S

Specs:
- Laptop Dell Inspiron 6400

- Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (installed Xubuntu-desktop -- which is what I thought was the problem the whole time, and I saw that somebody also mentioned that they were using Xubuntu. Can anyone else confirm/deny whether they're having this issue with Xubuntu as well?)

- Kernal 2.6.24-18-generic

- Firefox 3 beta 5/Swiftfox (some problems seem to be browser related, however it seems to happen with both the browsers)

Problem 1:
My battery is shot, and so if my power supply is unplugged, it'll go to sleep in a couple minutes automatically. When I resume, my mouse and keyboard is frozen. However, if I manually put it to sleep, it'll wake up fine :)

Problem 2:
Hardy seems to hang for a variety of different reasons. Once it happened while I was connecting through RealVNC in Firefox 3. Once or twice it worked okay, but more often than not, it's a sure-fire way to kill my Hardy. I tried this with Swiftfox and it was the same issue. When this would happen, when I would restart (or sometimes gdm would restart itself) and try to log into my xubuntu-desktop, the screen would hang at the blue background and I would just have a mouse. I'd have to manually restart and then log into gnome, reinstall xubuntu-desktop, and then I'd be able to log into xubuntu-desktop again.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/237248

The same issue seemed to happen with mplayer a few times. Often when I would play a particular file (mainly flv's, but not always) it would crash in a similar manner. And I'd have to get it up and running by reinstalling xubuntu-desktop.

Both these crashes seem to be more frequent in xubuntu-desktop, however I've had both of them happen in ubuntu-desktop a few times as well.

There seems to be a thread that discusses a similar issue here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=793457&highlight=xubuntu

Since I'm still a newbie at linux, I unfortunately forgot where the logs were and didn't bother looking them up. However now that I look at them, I recall that when I was connecting to a remote desktop through RealVNC, I was testing out my samba file server and so the issue occurred a few times when I connected to samba from the remote machine. I don't know why it didn't click earlier that the issue might have been with Samba :S. Anyway, here's part of the log.

Any help is much appreciated, and if I'm bringing up issues that aren't really related to the original post, please forgive me and let me know.

So it crashed yet again, checked the syslog and noticed that I was getting an error that this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=96068) link seems to be related to. Perhaps this is where the problem lies. Apparently it seems to be some video/gdm issues. Makes sense since it always seems to happen when a task that requires a lot of graphics or something is occurring.
