dual boot problem

Hi, I'am new to Ubuntu, this is my first post, seeking for help.
I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 in my laptop which used to have 3 partitions, 2 for XP and one for stuff.I installed Ubuntu in what used to be C:. then I realized I can no longer enter to windows in D: because I screwed up the C: partition formating it in ext3.
I did some research, then tried to fix the MBR with the XP recovery console, but no luck, it just got stuck after BIOS Post, so i put Ubuntu live cd and repair grub again, the problem is that i cant lose that win partition. Is there a way that i can copy the D: win xp to to the C: partition , and fix the MBR and reinstall ubuntu on a secondary partition?( d:)

sorry if its not clear enough I'm a total newbie to ubuntu y linux and I'm not very good at english hehe

I don't think you will be able to copy windows D: to C: and make it work, so forget that.

Try moving the bootable flag using sudo cfdisk or Gparted to sda5 or 6 (whichever is D: partition). Also try running fixboot on D: partition from the Recovery console. (Maybe the problem was that the boot files were originally on C partition, which got formatted).

Add a windows entry to menu.lst (bottom), using the sample as a guide.

hi, thanks for the help, i have done what you said, but no luck, grub says error 12, if i try to enter XP

I have a screenshot of gparted to see if you find something wierd, my d: partition is sda5

Herman seems to think there's a chance you can copy it to a primary partition and get it to boot. Good luck.
