View Full Version : [ubuntu] Numeric keypad not working

Fracture
April 28th, 2008, 11:46 PM
I am having an issue in hardy, my numeric keypad isn't working.

I've tried with NumLock on and off.

I've tried changing the keyboard via Systen>Preferences>Keyboard,

I've tried running dpkg-reconfigure console.

I ran "xev" and pressed the keys and it shows that key events are working but apps don't seem to get them.

Same problem- occuring straight after the upgrade to Hardy.
Additionally, the number pad navigation arrows don't work with number pad off, so I guess it's probably not accepting the 17 keys in the number pad.

My keyboard is a HP with built-in smart card terminal. Model number is KUSO133 or KUS0133, although I can find neither of those models on HPs website.

followup:
searched the threads a bit more and found a duplicate post on this problem.
The recommended fix worked for me.

I was having the same problem with Lucid, and the solution worked. I feel kind of stupid. I never even noticed that the keypresses were moving the mouse pointer.

Why is this option turning on anyway? I know for a fact i didn't do it myself, and it's annoying as all hell.

worked in 9.10. i had never touched the switch, but at some time Ubuntu corrupted to check the option and shut down the keypad. my discovery was when the DEL key did not work, yet i use it with some frequency.

i tore up a keyboard(unfortunately) before i read this post!

And - the fix works for Lucid / Ubuntu 10.04.

So others don't have to search back for the link, here's a quote of the fix (summarized):

Go to :
1) System
2) Preferences
3) Keyboard
4) Click Mouse Keys tab
4) Uncheck: Allow to control pointer using the keyboard

Thank you all (jurgen special thanks) for the post.

Crtl+Shift+NumLock ? News to me....faical117 how did you find this? Why would that even exist?

Re: Number Pad not working
To fix it on Hardy (If you have the problem) :
Go to :
1) System
2) Preferences
3) Keyboard (Tab: Mouse Keys)
4) Uncheck (Allow to control pointer using the keyboard).
This should fix the problem....!!

Works on 10.10 also.

No Idea how this was checked after using Linux for all these years.
Could changing Compiz setting and using a new profile imported from a fellow linux user do this?
I booted into Win7 just to see if the keypad was dead.. It worked. Searched the forums and found the answer.

Thanks again..

Oneiric has nothing like that now, I guess we should do it through gconf (but how?)

EDIT

fixed, now it's under Accessibility

Go to:
1) System Settings
2) Universal Access
3) On Pointing and Clicking Tab
4) Mouse Keys - OFF the option "Control the pointer using the keypad"

This is not a problem, its an additional option in system :p

"Additional option" sounds like "feature" under Microsoft products.
IMHO that option should be ticked *off* when it is added. It has spoiled a few hours of work for me after the unasked for update, before I had time to repair what was initially fine.

Please, Ubuntu folks, don't make the same mistakes that M$ made, and update us to death - thanks!

A hopeful professional Ubuntu user, running my small company on Ubuntu for 5 years+ now.:P
