I am trying to install UBUNTU onan old HP Omnibook. This laptop does not allow boot from CD. Is there a way round this?

Check the Bios to make the first boot is your cd.

Netboot installations are always fun, but they require some extra effort and at least on other networked machine.

yep, chek the bios and configure it to make your first boot is your CDrom.
to enter the bios, you should press "delete" (some pc it's ESC or F 8) when you turn on the pc
