View Full Version : [ubuntu] Major breakdown after trying a fresh install of 8.04

I run an old desktop, made up of scrap parts from numerous other machines. Until now I have been running Studio Ubuntu with only minor problems. That's when I decided that I would try out the new release.
BIG mistake!
For some reason, I can't even get it installed. I've run both the live cd and altervate cd burned on both DVD's and cd's, I've tried two different disk drives on my desktop (both a DVD and cd drive as well) and all of the have cleared a md5sum check. Yet, I keep getting messages telling me that the disks are faulty and the installation quits. Ultimately I went back 7.10, but now I can't even get to install that either (the same error messages).
As far as I can figure, both of the drives must have failed at the same time but this seems rather odd, as they seem to fail at the same 3-4 points of the progress. Can anyone come up with a solution to this? I would hate to have to try and go back to XP (if that is even possible), and buying a new drive seems a bit excessive considering the age and state of the machine. I have an iso of the 7.10 lying on a HD on it, could I boot from that?

I might add, that I'm pretty new to Ubuntu, if that is of any interest to anyone ;)

I haven't tried it but I read here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772601&highlight=boot+flash+drive) that it's possible to boot/install from a USB flash thumb drive. Let me know if it works out for you.

I am going to try this myself. I found a better guide HERE (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick). If it works like a live CD, it should be much faster I'd think.
