Upgrading Ubuntu

Hello,
I tried upgrading my Ubuntu from 7 to recent 8. but I totally curropted my Laptop. Hope there might be a way...

could you post some more info please?
what is the exact problem?
what caused it?
what errors are you getting if any?

While loading Ubuntu 7. I got an error message (I think its about Internet or so.) Then Ubuntu ran okay. then i tried upgrading Ubuntu. It restarted and went to something like a DOS prompt and asked for many things like ubuntu 7. then somewhere it failed and my machine got corrupted. Then i have to go back to reinstall windows Vista and then ubuntu.
Now I'm not trying to upgrade.

If your hard drive is corrupted you can fix it with this command:
fsck -f /dev/sda

Assuming you are fixing sda and you are at a root terminal.
