upgrade causes 2nd drive to disappear

I performed an upgrade to Hardy from the previous release via the command line, with the packages downloaded over the network. All went well, or so it seemed.

Upon reboot, the second drive (a PATA drive) was not seen nor mounted. The SATA drive, which had the "/" and swap partitions, was seen just fine. Both drives were visible before the upgrade.

I haven't been able to find a solution by tweaking BIOS settings. At this point, I am puzzled at why the new kernel doesn't see the same hardware.

Has anyone seen anything like this? I found some similar, but not quite on point, posts here via a search. They had to do with RAID setups. Mine isn't RAID at all.

Any suggestions?

Does the kernel recognize the drive at all? Have you tried this command?: sudo fdisk -l. Also, is the PATA drive listed in /etc/fstab? You may need to manually add it.

Thanks for the reply. The kernel doesn't recognize the drive at all. No word at all about it. fshw doesn't list it. fdisk -l doesn't show it. not sure about fstab;

as far as i can tell there has been some regression in the driver support for my nvidia chipset in the kernel. maybe its just best for me to rollback to ubuntu 7 somehow and give up on 8 for the time being.

I'm totally stumped by this.

Going from 7 to 8.04 has made ubuntu completely unable to see the PATA drive ..
