basically, you resize your mac partition with one of several methods, then install ubuntu to the free space. I can link you to more detailed info after you post what mac you have.

I am on an intel mac 1.8 gigahertz duocore. OSX 4.11 installed. 9 gigabytes free disc space.

I would also like to know the answer to this. I have an iBook (1.2 GHz PowerPC) G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11

You are in a completely different boat. Try checking the threads for PPC users stickied in the forum.

It says installation instructions for macbook? Is it the same as on an Imac?

Intel iMac (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Intel_iMac?highlight=%28imac%29) in help.ubuntu.com. I found this guide helpful first time I dualbooted ubuntu with os x on my mac mini.

I wrote most of that, and yes, it is pretty much all there is for an "install". This part of the process is pretty much the same for any intel mac. There are not any big issues to getting things working on an iMac though... Wireless is the same as the directions in the Macbook SantaRosa instructions though:
