i can't install the x server on my laptop :(

i have an HP nx6125 Turion 64 notebook, and i had some problems when i tried to install Ubuntu. My resolution is 1400x1050 and because of that (i guess) my x server doesn't start.

Can anyone help me? or at least give me some tips?

Do you know how to post your x.org file?
if not
Open terminal
and type in it
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

copy the whole text file and paste it here,and we will try to figure out the problems

He can't do those exact instructions, because you need X running to use gedit.
Instead, type

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then you should be able to view your xorg.conf file.

i tried that and the file was empty. (sudo nano /etc/x11/xorg.conf)

my graphic adapter is ati mobility radeon x300 (with shared memory from the system's ddr). My guess is that there is a conflict with the graphic adapter, because i have tried to install FC4 and i had the same problem.
so....any others ideeas?

it must be sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Make sure you write X11 and not x11

to write big x in console use shift then push x.

I have the same problem, the system hang whem I try to run Live and Install.
Thenm, I guess that is a kernel problem, because the Vga is a PCI XPRESS, them I install Suse 10.0 (kernel 2.6.13) and was perfect. recognize everything, except CardRead (theres no driver).
I think that a good way is to use vesa, but still has problems with DMA.

I had a similar problem with the dell inspiron 2500.

i changed the autodetected driver (in the 'device' section of xorg.conf) to "vesa"

that allowed a higher resolution.

side note:
VESA - Video Electronics Standards Association.

the VESA driver is a standards based vga driver that will function with most video card chipsets out there (if not all)

'vesa" worked for me.

i replaced in the "device" section, "ati" with "vesa" and it worked.

now i have a problem with my wireless adapter.....:(

I have same laptop nx6125 and have still same problem. I tried to change ati to vesa in xorg.conf, didnt help. I will try to install kubuntu in about 2h hope it works :(

I successfully got this working on my nx6125 by installing the proprietry ATI drivers from the CLI. After that it all leapt into life - actually it did need a reboot as the screen went very low contrast the first time I ran X (as root) which was very worrying for about 2 seconds!

Not near the lappie at the mo so I cant tell you exactly which fiel I used, I'll add that later if you are still having probs.
