Hello all,

I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this, i'm trying to install Ubuntu on an external Maxtor HDD (500GB) but i am having big problems, i have tried everything- to make things work im a desktop support technician and still cant work it out.

I have never used Linux before and this is what i am trying to do.

currant 200gb Windows Sata (do not want to touch)
maxtor external usb hdd 500gb (want to use 100gb partition for Ubuntu)

I want to be able to choose which one to boot from, my motherboard doesnt support dual boot so i have download osl2000

My pc for some reason wont install from the cd (keeps saying files are currupt) so have been using my notebook to install onto the drive.

I dont want to touch my Windows drive at all because i tried using Grub disk on my notebook and completely messed up the Windows boot.

I have tried so many things now and i dont know what to do, can someone give me some step by step instructions and for this purpose imagine im a complete idiot because im new to this OS.

If you can help it will be greatley appreciated!!

Change Gutsy for Hardy. If I were you I'd disconnect the internal drive during installation.

I tried the second one here because it looked a bit more easy to follow, the problems i had are.

At the end of installation is said it couldnt install Grub to hd1

The first directories i put into terminal apparently dont exist

It wouldnt let me edit the files in terminal

It asked me for a su password

Any other ideas?
