Upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 Stalls at Start

I am attempting to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 using the update manager. The upgrade starts but then stalls almost immediately while checking the package manager. I have tried several times and re-booted but it is always the same.

Try to turn off any non-official repositories in:
System | Administration | Software Sources
Then try the update again and be patient and wait, servers can be a little busy, maybe that's the problem.
