I upgraded my laptop from 7.10 to 8.04 yesterday. It took F..O..R..E..V..E..R.. but I'm guessing that it was because everyone else was too.

After the installation was done (no problems) I was/am unable to get a logon screen. My old one was a custome one (the one with the black and white dragon around a yin/yang symbol) so I'm guessing that there is something there GNOME doesn't like anymore. That's OK but how do I get it back to a standard log on screen?

Any ideas?

Mike

No one has any suggestions about my problem? This is disheartening. :(

I really need a fix for this!

Perhaps you should try to install EnvyNG from a terminal and use the terminal interface to install the restricted drivers. At your black screen, do CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a tty (terminal) and login.
Hopefully you have a wired connection, because the internet should be picked up automatically. Follow the directions here to install envyng-core - http://albertomilone.com/envyngfaq.html#A (so you can run in terminal). With all this you should be able to install the restricted nvidia drivers, reboot the computer, and have a GUI session.)
