I just upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. This seemed to go OK and the initial reboot gave me a fully working system. However, on the next reboot I got an error message saying that my Home directory was missing. I checked this with a live CD and confirmed that although the Home directory is present, it contains no files. I attempted to reinstall this from a backup, but was told that I did not have sufficient user permissions. I tried to change the permissions using sudo chmod, but once again permission was refused.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to get my home directory restored?
