OK...I have just installed Kubuntu 8.04 for about the 13th time on this computer. My problem is the low resolutions that so many others are having issues with. The install always results in either me staring at a blinking cursor or black screen, or a 640 by 480 resolution on my 22" widescreen monitor. I have tried most flavors of Kubuntu, both 32 and 64bit, both alternate and live cd's. I even tried the KDE remix. I have tried both the alternate and live cds of Ubuntu as well. I have a nice little stack of cds here. I have tried many, many of the suggestions on here to no avail. I have tried installing the drivers from the restricted drivers installer and have tried Envy to install the drivers.

Right now I haven't done anything, other than install Kubuntu 8.04. I haven't did any updates and haven't installed any drivers for my Nvidia card. Right now I am at 800 x 600 (that's the highest it will let me go) resolution with the stock vesa driver and plug and play monitor. I haven't even rebooted since the initial install reboot.

Here are my system specs:

EVGA 8800GTS 320Mb video card
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition motherboard
3Gb Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 memory
Western Digital 400Gb SATA hard drive
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz CPU
Lite-on DVD burner
Acer AL2216W 22" Widescreen monitor

I do have Windows XP Pro installed as well.

So, can anyone offer me some assistance? A step by step guide perhaps?

As far as my Linux expertise? I consider myself an advanced idiot. I am comfortable with installing and partitioning and have installed many distros over the last 12 years or so. However, I am not very comfortable with the command line, although I can copy and paste commands all day.

I must say that I have never had this much trouble installing Linux in the past.

Thanks

Have you tried the Nvidia site:

That didn't work and neither did this:

And once again I am staring at a blinking cursor (I am typing this on my laptop, which, oddly enough, I was able to install hardy on without a hitch). It's obvious hardy is not ready for prime time. I give up for now. Maybe in a few months i will try again. For now, this OS release ranks right up there with Windows ME and Vista. Gimme my XP!!

At any point did the live-cd work for you? Were you able to get X/KDE working?

Funny, I have 4 Hardies, 32 bit and 64 bit installed in 4 different machines and my experience is quite different. I'm sorry it didn't work for you.

I could not run Kubuntu/Ubuntu from the live cd, but I could install from it in safe graphics mode. If I tried to run the live cd I just got the black screen.

Thanks. I am sorry too because I really like it on my laptop.
