I have just crashed my ubuntu by trying to upgrade to Hardy.

Now all I want to know is, can I install ubuntu without repartitioning my hard drive, so I dont loose my /home directory. I have no chance of writing all my vital data on a dvd/cd.

Does the instalation of ubuntu must repartition the hard drive, always ?

No. Get a good CD of Hardy and start the installation, go Manual and use the old partitions. Don't bother with /swap. /home, you save by choosing it but NOT formatting it.

According to your PM's, you don't have a /home partition, so, your only choice is to save /home and data and reinstall.
