I've been reconfiguring my systems ever since I updated to Hardy on two machines 48 hours ago. I faced/still-facing problems with:
- Installing the ATI Driver [fixed]
- Dual monitor not recognized [fixed]
- usplash hanging problem reappeared (http://www.ubuntued.com/?p=43) [fixed]
- VMWare not working any longer [didn't do it yet]
- GNOME panel disappeared and not being able to get it back [dropped GNOME and using KDE instead a couple of hours later] (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=767160)
- Sound suddenly not working (tried to go through the guide here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting with no success) after fixing the ATI Driver problem [Fixed check http://kubasik.net/blog/2008/03/31/sound-problems-in-ubuntu-hardy/]

Last problem in date, I removed usplash and I now I don't even see the login screen on boot. I'm stuck with the command line, I reinstalled usplash and usplash-theme-ubuntu but no can do, I'm still stuck at the same place. [Fixed, turns out gdm was uninstalled automatically]

for the love of god, dont let a piece of software kill you!

for the gnome thingy, it seems you corrupted your user's profile (out of all the data you gave).

try creating a new user with useradd and login with it.

I don't doubt that the Ubuntu team is doing a good job improving the releases. But still, it's TERRIBLY annoying and time-consuming to reconfigure everything everytime you go through an update.

Hello, ATi Video problems!

I had similar problems as you, w/ a ATi Radeon HD 2400 Pro Video Card and I did the upgrade version from Update manager...

After the install, the ubuntu login comes up yadda yadda, I go to install the "restricted drivers" and after i restart, it goes low video mode, I select the driver that was for my card, and boom! no more Ubuntu (Black Screen) I try restarting, but still the same, so I will do a WHOLE clean install :D

Added a new user and tried to login with GNOME.
Nothing happened, the problem is still there.

Clean install on every new update? No thanks.
