Right, I have eventually managed to boot into Hardy after updating via the web from Gusty (7.10). I have a few problems:
1) In my GRUB boot menu it still lists my Ubuntu distro as 7.10 and if you select that you just get a blank screen. The only way to boot into Hardy is to run recovery mode "Fix X Server" and then "resume normal boot" which eventually brings up Hardy.
2) Because of the above problems I cannot restart properly, therefore not allowing me to install the required drivers to run my system properly.
I am posting this from my new Hardy system so it does work, but is far from fully functional.:(
