GRUB loading, please wait... Error 22

I just tried installing the 64 bit HH after trying it from the live CD. I chose an old partition to use, and after a bit of faffing around got it accepted as root.

Install seemed to go OK, no errors reported.

I rebooted when asked, but it came up with:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 22

And hung. I tried a full power off and on, same thing.
So now I can't get into my old XP install or my new Ubuntu install!

I could really use some help here - what can I try to bring my PC back to life?

I'd really appreciate some pointers here, I've got a dead PC after trying to install Ubuntu.

I can use the live CD, but I can't get an internet connection on that box so I need to fix with what I have.
