Ghastly Giblets

My upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy has gone horribly wrong, leaving me with a mixture of both. The Grub menu list shows the normal choice between 7.10 and Vista, but the welcome screen is blue with a yellow daisy. Attempts to update the system only offers a partial update, and accepting that brings up the strange message 'upgrade from Hardy to Gutsy is not supported by this tool'.
Firefox is still 2.0.0.14, and terminal still works ok.
How do I persuade the system that I would like to upgrade from Ghastly Giblets to Hardy Heron?

In the absence of expert advice, I tried

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

which worked perfectly. I now have a fully functional Hardy install, complete with sound which Gutsy never had.
