8800 is better

considering that compared to the price posted that it's $100 more, it'd should be better.

And a 9800GTX is better than that. So your point is? My point is that for around $117 (which includes shipping) this is a great deal.

no ones reads the Community Cafe for shopping tips
anyway 9800 is a compromised card due to marketing strategy.

The only reason for a new card would be gaming - and when you are a gamer so you should buy a 8800.

the only reason? maybe someone here has an ATI and wants a card that plays nice with Compiz-Fusion. hey check that out, that's another reason.

Yeah, this is a argument that destroys me - of course ATI users could have problems, therefore they should buy this card.

Given that this thread has 88 views (three of which are mine), then there are people that read the CC for deals.

Care to give us your in-depth marketing analysis on the 9800? I suspect you've attended all the "private" strategy meetings with Nvidia. Fill us in.

As for the 8800 being a better card for gaming, I'd be willing to bet any amount you care to wager that you couldn't pick out an 8800GT from 9600GT playing for instance Crysis. If there's that much of a difference then you should be able to immediately identify the card from say 20 identical desktop computers. I foresee failure. I did something similar to a guy at work. I took five identical desktops and switched out one of the video cards. He didn't have a clue. Needless to say, no more arguments from him. LOL.

...but can it run Crysis?

It should be able to run Crysis just fine.

Dual monitor support, compiz, etc, on the other hand, will be a while, since the 9600s aren't fully supported in linux yet :(.

From what I've seen a couple people have been able to manually install the drivers from nvidia's site with moderate success, but the majority of us are stuck for now...
Look on the bright side - by the time there are good drivers out, the price will have dropped even more :)
