This morning I installed 8.04 by installing 7.10 then updating to 8.04. I had 7.10 on a while ago with everything working well, but I had to take it off because I was running out of space on the mac side, but I just took some things off and made space for 8.04. I followed this guide http://www.michelem.org/2007/12/09/how-to-install-ubuntu-gutsy-on-a-macbook-31-generation/

and fixed the trackpad and now I am trying to get compiz-fusion running. That is all that I have done, nothing else. I read that the video card is "blacklisted". I had compiz-fusion running before, and I cannot remember how I got it to work. I also read that I would be prompted to drivers for my video card after installation, but I never saw any. When I check Hardware Drivers, it says that "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". I am wondering how to get compiz and the 3d drivers working and a complete guide for a santa rosa macbook pro for 8.04. I have only found 7.10 and older versions of macbook pros.

I did, from there I went to the santa rosa section and all it says is "The new NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card runs on the 'nvidia-glx-new' graphics drivers. These drivers will be recommended to you for installation on first boot after installation. To install, just select the 'nvidia-glx-new' drivers in the Restricted Driver menu." I assume that the restricted driver menu is now the hardware driver menu? Then it just says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". In the device drivers, there is only my wifi driver.

Greetings....sound like you don't have the nv drivers installed boss
try using envyng if you don't know how to install the drivers

http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

I use it on my computers (one is ATI and one is NVidia)
works great....

good luck:popcorn:

Not sure if this was ever resolved but I had a similar issue. Upgraded to 8.04 from 7.10 with the santrosa. Video was stuck with 800x600 even though i had the restricted driver enabled. I tried using envyng to reinstall nvidia drivers but that completely broke X. dmesg complained with a version mismatch with the kernel (100 vs 169 or something along those lines). In the end simply removing the nvidia drivers with envyng and restarting fixed the issue.

I now do NOT have the nvidia-glx-new drivers installed. Just the nvidia-kernel, and linux-restricted-modules. I can run full resolution with desktop effects.
