upgrade from gutsy to hardy x freezes with black screen

I upgraded from gutsy to hardy today. on boot, my x-server freezes with a black screen. The keyboard is unresponsive, and the machine cannot be reached over the network once x tries to start. I have to cut the power to restart.

I'm running 64 bit on an optiplex 745. The video card is intel GMA3000 and the monitor is Dell UltraSharp 2407FP,Wide Flat Panel.

any suggestions?
