Upgrade failure: python2.4-minimal error

I just chose to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 via update-manager. During the "Clean Up" phase of the upgrade procedure, I got some failure relating to the python2.4-minimal package. Sorry, that's all the info I have. I wanted to copy and paste the message in the embedded Terminal display, but the modal error dialog box prevented me from doing so. Closing it immediately led me to another modal box, with only the choices "Restart Now" and "Close." I chose the latter, which caused the lower window to close as well!

Anyway, has anyone else seen this? What to do?
