I have installed Version 7.01 of ubuntu and it has worked perfectly. I updated all files with the update manager.

I then clicked on the upgrade button to 8.04

The system downloads in the installation upgrade files

It then says preparing to upgrade and downloads the files.

It then says setting now software channels and downloads the files.

Then it says could not calculate the upgrade.

Then it reverts back to the previous state.

Am I missing something.

Don't waist your time with 8.04. I did the same thing you did and had the same problem, so I downloaded the ISO and burned a disk. When I got it in, I tried to activate desktop graphics, obviously wouldn't because of no video card driver but 8.04 doesn't pick up hardware like 7.10 does for some reason, installing apps and programs line Envy and LimeWire give relentless problems, all these errors starting with "/E" saying things can't be found, tried to use compiz by typing ccsm in terminal, got a slew of errors, tried reinstalling compiz in synaptic package manager, a slew of errors, just error after error after error for trying to get anything working, even the internet kept losing connection (:mad:with a hard line!). Reinstalled 7.10 and happy again. Stay away from 8.04, it's NOTHING like the Beta. Epic fail.
