View Full Version : [ubuntu] ATi 320m and effects not working in 8.04

Hi all,

Background, installed Ubuntu desktop on a old laptop:
AMD XP2400
768MB ram
ATi 320m integrated video

Made the upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 using the update manager which went pretty smoothly.

However noticed that effects were totally off once I rebooted and proceeded to turn them to full effects but I get the error messagebox stating effects failed. In 7.10 I had no probs, and the full effects worked well.

So I decided to do a bit of playing around. I installed xserver-xgl then rebooted, and I could enable full effects then. But the desktop was really laggy (running about 5-10fps), even typing was laggy. Turning the effects to none still resulted in the same laggy response. So I removed xserver-xgl and now its working fine again, but no effects :(

I understand that ATi don't support the 320m anymore. Anyone got any ideas on how to get a smooth desktop again with full effects/compwiz? :-k

you could try installing the ATI driver through envy.

Go to synaptic and get the envyng modules.

In a terminal type envyng -t and let it install your ATI driver. Worth a try.

ok just got the ATi driver working (I think), but had to screw around a bit to get my native res back (1280x800). However effects are still not able to be enabled.

Here is my xorg.conf file as generated by the ati installer. Note that I removed all resolution options except 1280x800 and modified the 1280x800 timings to make -hsync to +hsync

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
