Need to fix Hardy/revert to Gutsy, please help

I upgraded to 8.04 today and foolishly decided to enable the ATI drivers. Now every time I log in I get a white screen, which apparently is not a new issue.

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured out how to disable the driver in failsafe mode. Thanks.

Not sure about a fix, but sounds like a wise move would be to boot from the live cd and complete a backup of (at least) your /home directory before you go any further. I occasionally use the package hudbackup, when not doing a straight partimage dump of a partition.
