I have an old desktop running 8.04 and a laptop running xp home in ntfs. I have connected these two computers with a network switch connected to a router.
The 8.04 can see the xp and open up xp folders. But when I try to move files from xp to 8.04, i get the message that i don't have permissions to do the move.

Xp can see the 8.04 but cannot open any folders. I get the message that i don't have permissions to open .

How can I transfer files over the network. Please help

To where are you trying to move the files? Desktop, home folder, or elsewhere?

Sorry! I did not understand your question before.

I have a second HD on 8.04 with FAT filesystem. I am trying to move the files from xp to this second HD on 8.04.

Sorry for confusion... I suspect the permission problem may be with the second HD. See if you can copy a file to the (8.04) desktop.

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it. Here is what happened.

I was successful in copying a file from the HD with the kernel to the HD with FAT.Both are on the Linux computer.

Also, I am able to copy .doc files from the XP computer to 8.04 computer. But not able to copy .pdf files over the network.
