Im trying to connnect to au.archive.ubuntu.com with apt and it just times out.
I get something along the lines of...
sudo apt-get update
just times out once it hits that server???

Same thing here in the US. The servers are getting hammered. Try again later. Like after 8.10 apparently. :(:)

The servers are getting hammered today with the release of Hardy. You might want to change to another set of servers. Go to System-->Administration-->Software Sources. Under the "Ubuntu Software" tab click on the "Download From" dropdown box and click "other." In the box that appears click "Select Best Server." Wait until the tests are done and click "Choose server." That should help out for the time being. Afterwards you'll probably want to change it back to the Main Server option.

He was just joking. 8.10 comes out in October.:) If you really need to get a package today I would suggest using the method I outlined. I've installed a number of packages using different servers tonight. That's really the best option for the time being if you want to get stuff installed.
