i can't even get hardy to boot to a live cd. after selecting to run or install ubuntu, the screen clears like normal and states at the bottom (paraphrase) "keeping kernel alive"
afterwards my monitor goes into sleep mode after 2-5 seconds.

any ideas?

this is for the amd 64 bit version
i have a nvidia geforce 8500 gt pci-e card

You have to install with the Alternate CD and configure your xserver at the end of the installation.

so i'm assuming you mean something other than
ubuntu-8.04-desktop-amd64.iso

can you link to the alternate?

this page does not reference an alternative release
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

There is no difference to the actual operating system, just the installer is in text mode instead of being a live cd with graphics. I had to use the alternate cd when I installed Ubuntu because the live cd didn't work and I still have a fully functioning system :)
