i was downloading the iso from the www.ubuntu.com.
i use the "downthemall" plugin of mozilla firefox as download manager.
when the download get 10% (about 70mb),suddently it begin from the first and can't pause. what was that problem?

I suggest to try another mirror from the dropdown list on ubuntu.com. Maybe that server is overloaded.
Or better: use a torrent if you know how that works. torrent speeds are great at the moment.

wow, but what is your internet connection speed?
because i was trying to download the torrent with azureus, i've got up speed limited to 5 kb and down speed unlimited but maximum download speed is 10 kb that i can reach.
right now i'm downloading from another mirror, and it seemes ok( hope that).
By the way , can anybody tell a url to seed the torrent or to download the torrent file so i can open it with azureus?
by the way, is there difference between ktorrent and azureus(other the programm language and cache memmory)?

yeah, does seem silly for there not to be a torrent link on the main download page (unless I'm being blind?). All that bandwidth for FTP ain't gonna be cheap!
...and there seem to be a lot of fake torrents going around too :(

still, can't wait for the download to finish! gonna be sweeet!

I downloaded the torrent from here:

The download speeds, using Ktorrent, were 400-500 kb.

yeah, I downloade via torrent this morning the alt. and the desktop versions and of course my machine at home is full open uploading them back to the community.

The Alternate image averaged over 800k/sec download speed
the Desktop image averaged a little under 400k/sec download speed

The alternate image does seem to be faster...it's downloading now at 600-700KB/sec. Seeding both iso's, as we speak.

Here are instructions for installing with the alternate cd:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/

The alternate cd has a "text-based" installer and installs the same packages and desktop as the Desktop cd.

In my laymans terms. The desktop CD is nice because someone with little or no knowledge can boot to it and click through the installation with a mouse and keyboard. On some systems it just doesn't work for reasons beyond my knowledge. When it doesn't work you can boot to the alternate CD and do the install with the keyboard (i think the mouse works there too). The end result is the same.

oh, but isn't the alternate CD for upgrading and not fresh install?

It's mainly for a fresh install with the added benefit of being able to upgrade from it.
