How are you going to download, buy, get a hold of Hardy Heron?

Sporkman
April 23rd, 2008, 08:28 PM
I will do a system update, which will convert my 8.04 beta to 8.04 production.

As I already have the latest upgrades, I'm not too eager to update that quickly, so I'm just gonna download via torrent and do my usual upgrade.

Same here. Though I will be seeding the live CD. It's always nice to have a live CD, especially if I break something

I'll be downloading torrents of Kubuntu and Ubuntu, both alt and live discs.

Jackster
April 23rd, 2008, 09:47 PM
I'll just be using apt to update from the RC.

I'll also be downloading both from HTTP/FTP and bittorrent. I've got to get a few copies of Ubuntu and Kubuntu for a LUG later tomorrow evening so I'm hoping one of those will be fast enough to get both the images to me in time!

I upgraded to alpha 5 a while back, and I've kept up with updates, so...I don't have to do anything. Pretty sure that as it is now is how the install disks will be (you know, except that I have my preferred apps already installed).

Thread title changed to be more descriptive.

I normally use HTTP download, but I plan to use BitTorrent this time to help the servers. I've not used it before though, quick question...am I seeding Ubuntu all the while it is downloading through BitTorrent? Does it stop when I close the window, and therefore I should leave it open as long as possible?

amazingtaters
April 23rd, 2008, 11:21 PM
Well, seeing as I'm already there, I'll just do my regular daily package upgrades at 1/1000th the normal speed.

And to Ozor, yes you will be upping the whole time you're downloading. But do please keep seeding. I'm thinking of grabbing the first iso to hit demonoid and seeding it for as long as possible.

macogw
April 24th, 2008, 12:54 AM
I'll use Transmission to get the isos for the installfest. I really like Deluge, but it's CPU intensive when we're not talking about a crazily-popular torrent.

Eclipse.
April 24th, 2008, 12:56 AM
Will just update my system, then I will rsync my rc disk and seed it.;)

I think there will be a decent number of people on the torrent. There's definitely the chance for a weeks worth of good seeding I think.

I would have done this too, but I need to see if any of my bugs go away with a clean install.

Right, which is why I'm going to use Transmission. It's lighter weight. I don't know if Deluge gets heavier when the torrents are really popular, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

My ISP mirrors the Ubuntu servers (as well as just about any other reasonably popular distro, so I get it at unmetered FTP.

That said, I'm probably not going to get it, as thus far, it hasn't worked on my rig (kernal reports I/O errors and forces reboots - If the 'LiveCD' doesn't check, then I'm not installing.)

I just uploaded the final beta. I will stick with that for a while and then see whether I want to do a fresh install or stick with what I have.

At some point would like to find out how to make the torrents work. I have never yet found a writeup that makes sense to me. If I did I would be glad to add to the torrent.

The quickest way is obviously the matter accelerator, just flip a few switches and done! This only works if you have one laying around though...

I used to FTP it each time, but got the torrent for the RC to see what it was like. Never used torrents before and was very impressed!

I need a check box, not radio button for the poll.
Downloaded hardy on a painfully slow connection, took two days through bittorrent. Requested for a CD from shipIt.
If the updates from RC to final is minimum, will upgrade or will wait for requested CD as I do not want to go through the pain of d/l again :(

A TARDIS is a wonderful thing ... I'm already running 12.04 and it's amazing, The dev team did a great job implementing the open-source drivers for the 3D holographic display. (Or at least, they will do a great job implementing the open-source drivers for the 3D holographic display matrix.)

They should be proud of themselves. At least, they will be proud of themselves. Eh, well ... something like that. :D

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Seriously, though ... I'll wait a few days and do a system upgrade. Then I'll download the live and alternate ISOs and burn them so I'll have physical media available for backup and to make copies for curious people.

I'm going to update from the repo. on my two systems but will get the regular/alternate torrents so I can make some install CD's and might order one after a while.

On Thursday the 25th I will be working from home and need my Internet connection to be fast.

However, on the night of the 25th I will download.....some live CDs and then seed them. I will not need a FAST connection for another week so I might just let my Fedora machine seed them for a few days to help the planet get Hardy Heron. :)

I will be interested to see what will be available, this is the first time I have been this closely involved to a new release. I was hoping to download the following live CDs tomorrow evening:

64-bit Ubuntu
32-bit Ubuntu
32-bit Kubuntu

I don't know if they have every version available right away.

I have a test machine here just waiting to become a Hardy Heron pioneer ;)

My ISP has a server which is a mirror of the Ubuntu site, it contains the releases and package database. Downloading off that server is ofcourse very fast, since I'm practically directly connected to that server. So I'll FTP it from there.

This is the order I generally use:

1) If posted on usenet, I'll get ISOs that way.
2) If there are good mirrors that have it (anl.gov or gigenet.com) I'll get CDs there.
3) Once I have CDs I'll get the DVD ISOs through bittorrent.

I'm using update manager. I know that they want everybody to bittorrent, but I want to upgrade without wiping out my system and update manager just seems the best place to do that.

I still have an hour or two left to download but it's no biggie.

After it's installed I might seed a few via bittorrent to make up for bogging down the servers.

I installed RC last weekend from a livecd so I will just do an update. Actually I had a lot of updates late last night so I think I am already up to date with the final.

Once the demand subsides, I will download the alternate disk (better chance of working on other peoples computers) and then update friends and family who want help.

Weird, no matter the popularity of the 5 or 6 torrents I typically have going, I have never seen Deluge make my cpu monitor noticeably move....

Just d/l'ed the torrent and will do a clean install over the weekend. Sadistic? You decide... ;)

Gusty's been great! But we're gonna grill up some fish now.

The seeding continues...........
