You'll just have to keep checking the ubuntu.com website all day long like the rest of us :)

One thing to note - don't download before the announcement, even if CDs have appeared. You might be wasting bandwidth.

Its probably a good idea to tell everyone to lay off 'getting ahead' by downloading the RC now, its just going to add excess stress on the main servers while the mirrors are trying to mirror it.

I know last year they took the RC down around this time to stop that sorta thing.

Also, last year it wasnt officially available until about 11:30 am (British time) so it might not be a great idea to stay up all night.

i believe for technical issues, canonical needs update the servers this night, for example how many time needs to update all mirrors at the same time, i thing this can be the reason why canonical not upgrade at another RC, for example to print the cd´s needs a less 1 week the RC have date of 18 ( with risk to mistake) , that is only 4 business day. The logistic process in this moment most be a madness. Hehehe, that’s is only my opinion. What are you think?

What are you on about? The ISOs were up (and I had them downloaded) by the end of the release date. The main ubuntu.com page, however, was down because everyone downloading it had practically DDoS'd the site. They replaced it with a plain "This is Ubuntu's page. Due to high demand, we're going minimalistic. Go download it from <link>" page. Now, I don't know if in your timezone it was the day after already (since the only guarantee is that in *some* timezone it's that date, so the International Date Line confuses some people), but it certainly wasn't 3 days.

so would doing a update-manager --devel-release now be a really bad idea? wont it be pretty much the same as the release version? Have there been many changes from the RC version or the last daily, anyone?

The Web Page had a command for doing the upgrade. I was afraid to mess around with that in case it upgraded to one of the betas.
Can I upgrade just via update manager? i.e. Bring it up and keep telling it to look for updates?
I would like to do it somewhat automatic either via update manager or the shell command because I don't want to wipe out my system and I'm afraid of accidentally doing a fresh install.

I will be a little differnent, but I did that last time round, and it was SLOOOOWWW. Think 168kb/s on a normally 600-700kb/s connection.

Yes, the Update manager will let you know when you can upgrade.

Synaptic/update manager will notify you about a new distro version being available.

So will Hardy be released at midnight GMT? Taking into account that canonical is based out of the UK... Does that mean I can download it at 7pm my time (ontario, canada)? Or is it going to be released sometime tomorrow morning?

Dunno. It'll be announced. If you're planning on grabbing it tomorrow i'd avoid trying to download it the normal way, since the servers will be pretty overloaded. Grabbing the torrent file from the release page (http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/) will get you a LiveCD much quicker.

In fact you could just install the Release Candidate today and upgrade to the final tomorrow.

Gutsy came out a little before 0900 GMT (10am London time), if I recall correctly. So, if you're waiting from midnight, it'll probably be a long wait.

There isnt an exact hour, its just released sometime that day. As paqman said, please use torrents, they save bandwith and ease the server load.

As mentioned above, use torrents.
Undoubtedly, there will be alot of seeders + leachers. Your download should be super fast, if I predict correctly.

The release team, which consists of not only Canonical employees but volunteer community members too.

(EDIT: Actually, just one non-Canonical person and five Canonical people.)

Can I do an update without wiping my system via the live CD?

I assume that I'll have to do 'quiet splash noapic irqpoll' again?

If you don't wanna wipe your system, you can just update through the update-manager. It will let you know there's a new version available, all you gotta do is click "Install" and the rest will happen magically.

If you're fully up to date, that's it. You're on the final version right now.

If the CD images were made for testing three days ago, then we could be ahead of the release version for some packages, but My boot menu still says "(development branch)". Will the distro upgrade change only this? I think it will be a little more than that.

I'm on Gutsy at the moment. What is best way to get on to Hardy? Use the upgrade option from inside Gutsy or download the latest ISO and start all over again? Obviously, would prefer the upgrade route - but any pros/cons?
Thanks

neurostu

ambuj, that depends. If you want all your settings to migrate then use the packaged upgrader. If you want to clean up your system and remove any junk you've accumulated the do a fresh install.

Yeah, but at this point, I think the QUICKEST way to do it would be to torrent the new release, since the servers already are, and will continue to be for at least 2-3 days, pretty hammered (I mean, look at what's u with the forums). For those of us who have a separate /home partition, it is easy as pie to do a clean install and not lose out files and settings, so maybe you should look into it, or even possibly set a new one since you've only been on gutsy for a month.
