KDE and Gnome are the 2 main desktop environments in Linux,
some others are; XFCE, Fluxbox etc

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/whichbuntu

Hardy Heron is just the code name for the 8.04 release.

KDE (the default in Kubuntu)
Gnome (the default in Uubuntu)

KDE tends to be more of a resource hog, when compared to Gnome that is.
Gnome is said to be less configurable, when compared to KDE.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE

Both are very, very good. You can simply use a live CD to test, then make your mind up.

Others are available, window managers such as:
Openbox, Fluxbox, Blackbox.

Google is your friend.

Welcome to the forums!

Gnome and KDE are just the shell around your system to make it look nice. I find gnome to be very easy to figure out as a beginner, and I think it looks nicer without all of the annoying 'K' logos in every single application. Both are customizable (KDE more so, but this is just what I've heard, and both can look any way you want them to look, even like a Mac or Windows if you want to) and both have a wide support base. I would recommend Gnome if you are a beginner. All this means is that you download Ubuntu instead of Kubuntu.

Hardy Heron is the name for this release, just as Leopard was for the latest mac release. Ubuntu has an alphabetical naming scheme. (The last one was Gutsy Gibbon and the next is Intrepid Ibex, E..F..G..H..I..J) The numbers for the release correspond to when they were released. Hardy Heron is 8.04, meaning it was released 2008, in April (04).

Don't hesitate to ask questions here about anything you need help with in Ubuntu. However, please search the forums/use google first, as someone has likely already had your problem. Also, we like good spelling and grammar. I have found the people on the forums to be some of the most helpful and knowledgeable anywhere. Have fun!

I personally prefer kde, as it is simple to change the way it looks, and it runs light.

I fully disagree with this statement...definitly a common KDE misconception. From what I've seen, they're about the same. I'd give both a try. If I had never tried KDE, I never would have switched to it...

Note: I didn't say that the user should not try both. actually, I said
"Both are very, very good. You can simply use a live CD to test, then make your mind up."

It's well known that the memory consumption of KDE is greater that Gnome's.

I only read the 2nd link, but you do realize that pretty much everyone in that thread agreed disagreed with you...

These "well known" must be very misinformed. :KS

Hello friends:

I've installed Ubuntu with Gnome desktop enviroment, then, using apt-get, installed KDE. The question is, how can kde be removed? just typing apt-get remove kde?

I ask this because I installed Ubuntu on a 20G partition on my computer, so I'd like to have a extra space. Does KDE use a lot of HHD space?

Is there a way to modify partitions?

Where is the trash container in KDE?

Thanks

On the gnome/kde thing I going to give my opinion.... I am biasd towards GNOME but here it is.
I have a very old computer (a p2 overclocked to 416 megahertz) and I can run GNOME fine, however, I tried to run KDE and it was a no-dice deal.... could barely function..... and no it wasn't that long ago...

and
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde-core

have some great information about install/uninstalling kde.

The actual directory for Trash is .Trash in your home directory iirc, and you can access it from the desktop, or I'm pretty sure there is an applet you can add to the taskbar/kicker.
