For some reason on my Thinkpad, the volume up and down controls Microphone, which is what comes up in the volume meter. I have to click on the sound icon to go to volume control and adjust PCM volume. "Speaker" does not show up, just Mic and PCM. Thanks y'all -- this forum is making my ubuntu newbie life much better - I'll have you know I traded my iphone and my printer just to switch.
