View Full Version : [ubuntu] Are there pre-installed applications not directly available from START?

I am interested in virtualisation, and having heard that there is a virtualisation solution in the form of KVM in Hardy Heron, I tried to find it. I could not spot an icon / link anywhere on the start menus, but a file search showed lots of stuff that looked to be part of it.

(This is release candidate 1 I was examining).

This made me wonder...

Are there applications which are installed and ready in Ubuntu, but have not been given a direct link on the desktop?

Or to put it another way:
Are there toys for me to play with I did not know about!

That covers the KVM, but what about other stuff? Am I missing anything?

Hundreds, maybe thousands!
To see whats there go to System>Administration>Synaptic
:guitar:Click the status tab and choose installed.
Click on a package and a description of what it does is displayed.

Well, there are lots of command line tools =). Those are fun to play with. But graphically, most of the installed apps are in the menu by default I believe.

I don't have a net connection working under Ubuntu, which is why I was so interested in stuff that's already there!
