View Full Version : What is your free -m ?

I`m just curious as to memory usage. I know there are a lot of people here running different operating systems and different versions of *buntu.

Please tell what OS and desktop environment you are using and post the output of

free -m

and tell what applications you are running.

It may not be that useful, but it could be interesting.

KDE takes almost all of your available memory when running, although it only uses a portion of it.
My swap never gets used no matter how many applications i have open.

Firefox, irssi, Pidgin, Twitux, Compiz, and Evolution on Hardy. It's not actually slow. Hardy seems to be using lots of memory just for that caching column. It actually makes things a lot snappier since it doesn't have to go past cache to fetch memory.

I have 2GB of swap which I would never use except....laptop. This way I can hibernate. If you don't have a laptop with perfect hibernate support like mine, though, don't bother with doubling your RAM in swap.

Customized Intrepid running Openbox, with all the unused bloat removed (no wireless, no bluetooth, using Slim display manager, etc.). Nothing open but Firefox and a dozen urxvt terminal windows -- sometimes I hit 700MB under a heavy load of applications, so Intrepid seems to be a memory hog even with a minimal installation :(

The number under "total" is the total amount of physical memory in the computer that the operating system can use (in my case 3961 MB). "used" is how much physical memory is in use, and "free" is how much physical memory is free. "shared" means nothing (according to the man page of "free" it is obsolete). "buffers" and "cached" indicate memory used by the Linux kernel, for disk buffers etc. "swap" is swap space on disk.

I guess that 1312 MB is the total amount of memory used by the kernel. Note that 679 is on the line with "-/+ buffers/cache". I guess this means that 679 MB is used for disk cache buffers.

Arch Linux, with dwm, PCManFM, rtorrent, mutt, snownews, Arora (a cool WebKit browser), irssi and XMMS running. Most of it is used up by X, though.

With so much free memory it's nice to be able to load Gb of movie files directly into memory. Watch them and play around with them with ease. :)
