'Get the FUDs' is old news.

Whaaaa???

A bit off topic; I'd seen several variants of that one ad, titled "The Highly Reliable Times" before. I thought it was intended to be a joke, but I guess Microsoft truly is responsible for it. And to think of all the times I laughed at it when I saw it on slashdot.

I guess Vista's been driving the marketing guys to the brink of insanity. Or, one man's propaganda is another man's satire :-P

Hmmm.... Looks like Microsoft is trying really hard to defend itself against Linux on the server platform; making claims that it is 99% more effective. On behave of all the Network Admins out there I would like to propose the following statement...
.
.
BUUUUUUAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA <deep breath> AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA <side hurt> HAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA <cough><cough> HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA....... <pass out>

Old news, but I just noticed their screencasts (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/compare/windows-server-comparison-screencasts-and-webcasts.mspx). These are hilarious! They are clearly trying to make Ubuntu look less efficient to work with, but even so the setup of PHP and Perl is visibly easier and more streamlined with Linux.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/compare/webcasts/windows-with-perl-and-php.mspx
(And that doesn't even count finding the darn things for Windows).

True. Don't think that was their intention...

This is what I find extremely annoying... I mean look at what I searched for!

Isn't that borderline libel and slander?

I mean, 1. the site clearly sports heavily biased/wrong info, and 2. getthefacts has nothing whatsoever to do with linux-certification.

That was hilarious! The Windows screen cast shows him clicking through a bunch of annoying dialogs to install php and in Linux, he does it with one command. If I were in charge at Microsoft and I was trying to make Windows look superior, that's one video I'd just skip.

I think I just peed myself from laughing at that.

I go to a high school that just switched from Windows Server to Ubuntu Server for the school website. I actually have to work with them, and it was much more efficient and easier to use.

Those screencasts are so ridiculous...

microsoft is banking on the typical windows users' fear of using the terminal. They don't realize that users who install servers, apache or PHP may not be paranoid about using the command line.

My company uses Google Adwords and I've had to threaten one of two competitors in order to stop them from using our name as a key search term.

Regarding those quotes from the linked page (http://www.microsoft.com/ireland/getthefacts/default.mspx), I'd suggest a cross between post-hoc rationalisation and cognitive dissonance being the cause for the statements. They've now made the switch and, like it or not, it's going to need to be defended.

did you notice that this guy used "mkdir" to create a folder on windows? I thought it should be "md".... at least that's what I remember from my old DOS times and within Total commander...

microsoft is banking on the typical windows users' fear of using the terminal. They don't realize that users who install servers, apache or PHP may not be paranoid about using the command line.

MS: "Use Ubuntu Server, and you have to use the CLI for EVERYTHING!"

Admin: "And that's bad ... how?"

MS: "I don't get it. The marketing folks said people HATE the CLI? What's the deal with these people?!"

Admin: "You're thinking of your Windows Desktop users, not Server Admins, you moron."

MS: "Now he's berating us. Well, that invalidates the findings. Dismiss this Server Admin, and bring in another one. We'll keep interviewing them until we can get one that agrees with our stance. Then we'll report it as fact."

Two accountants go for a job at Microsoft.

They each are asked just one question, "what is one plus one"

Accountant A replies "two"

Accountant B replies "what would you like it to be?"

Guess which one got the job?

I think in MS-DOS either md or mkdir can be used to create a directory.

i love this page
http://www.microsoft.com/ireland/getthefacts/default.mspx

the bit that i love the most is this

"We looked at Linux for our Unix database migration, but found that Windows and Linux provided similar costs, and Windows was stronger on the other key decision factors."
- IT Executive from "Driving Lower TCO and Rapid ROI through Unix Migrations: IT Decision Maker Perspectives" Study Mercer Management Consulting, September 2006)

please tell me how Linux, a *FREE* operating system can cost the same as a windows platform?

I don't think they meant the actual costs of the OS, I think they meant training and whatnot. Still a pathetic attempt all around.

this is all just advertising. These are probably like all the sites online that actually do host with MS server lol. and notice it says something like "we tried everything . . . MS server is what we choose." that "..." is where they say we found out that linux is cheaper more stable and a better deal but MS gave us gratis copies of their server editions and came and set it up for us. So MS server is what we choose. yeah the lovely thing about advertising is you can always twist peoples words to say whatever you want. like on movie boxes. you know a reviewer will say hilarious at parts but mostly dreadful. But when you get the box it just says so and so says "hilarious..."

Come on, what do you expect? This is Microsoft talking about Microsoft! Do you expect them to say: "You Linux adepts are the best, you are so right and we are a bunch of morons for developing our OS!"

[-( Tss... That's quite unlikely. Would it be on Ubuntu's webpage or Redhat's or FreeBSD or even Apple's, the bells would sound just the same.

Didn't they get forced to edit parts of that, because they flat out lied about hardware costs and training?

The honest trueth is that simply by having M$ fund the questions results will be ruined, the instant you ask a sysadmin for his/her opinion and tell them that it's for windows you cause a break, either they use windows and agree to talk, or they want nothing to do with windows, or don't see how their use linux would be used, and opt out, either way you get a very biases outcome.

Forgive spelling, for some reason firefox spellcheck stopped working this morn, I've still not reinstalled the dictionary to check that.
