When will the final supported version of Hardy be released? I am using Gutsy on the desktop machine, but don't want to set up 8.04 and then have to redo for 8.10. My understanding is that it is due out this month.

The planned date is April 24 for Hardy. 8.10 Intrepid will be out in October.

I don't understand the question. Hardy will be realeased in a few days in its final form, and the desktop edition will be supported with security updates for three years following that date. 8.10 won't be out until October, and you are free to upgrade or not at your discretion.

The first number stands for the year, and the second number after the dot stands for the month.
That is, 8.10 should be released on October 2008

Dude, 8.10 is due in October, 8.04 is due on April 24th.

8.04 is a Long Term Support version meaning it will be supported for 3 years and it is meant for people who don't want to upgrade every 6 months.

I'm pretty sure the release date is April 24th. Little more than a week away. This release is supported for 3 years (5 if you have a server edition)

Meanwhile. 8.10 which will be released sometime in October (with a feature list, roadmap and other things to come out after 8.04 is released) is just a regular release. The way I am told is that long term releases focus on stability while short term releases work on new features and improving ubuntu in general.

Why are people guessing and saying "I'm pretty sure it will be on April 24th"? There's nothing "secret" about the release date, and you don't need to guess. Everything you want to know is right there on the Ubuntu homepage.

Ubuntu is released every six months. So now we'll have 8.04, then 8.10 in October, after that 9.04 in April 2009, 9.10 in October 2009 and so on.

There's no reason to skip release 8.04, but also, if you have a system that works perfectly fine with version 7.10 and you don't want to risk breaking things, there's also not really a reason to upgrade to 8.04 immediately.

6.06 Dapper was originally 6.04 but it was delayed 2 months, so things could change.

I always wandered why dapper was .06 and not .04 :KS

Learning every day on the Forum. So what I have now is the beta version of Hardy, and the release version of 8.04 is April 24. Now that I know the code,(the version numbering, that is) I won't need to ask again. Thanks.
