What I mean is - laptop concepts ... maybe like these http://images.google.com/images?hl=et&q=laptop+concept&lr=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi
Im WELL impressed with THIS http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/02/lg-debuts-ebook-concept-laptop-with-oled-screen-liquid-fuel/
quote "which is powered by an awesome bubbly blue methyl alcohol fuel instead of a regular (read: boring) lithium-ion battery"
Apparently LG has already produced a prototype.
Sony Vaio concept looks nice http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/slick/vaio-zoom-concept-is-exactly-how-we-want-laptops-to-look-in-the-future-301098.php

I'd want my laptop to be absolutely silent (not a hiss or beep whatsoever) which may actually come true with SSD disks

keyboard should be based on multitouch technology also

no thanks, I like buttons... nice buttons with actual movement and feel

I have been thinking about something else: extreme power saving.
I want to be able to turn off any component of my computer whenever I want. For example, when I want to leave the computer on to download something during the night, I want to turn off the gfx card and the sound card (integrated or not) and even turn off any unneeded memory sticks or leave only one CPU core. I want them off completely, no point in wasting power. There has to be a common interface implemented across all possible components but I don't think that this is such a problem. I any case the gain will be bigger than the headache of development.

Why wasn't this one thrown out there?

my concept is simple. A mac book Air like laptop, with some kind of DVD RW, That run on Linux.

Thing I would say NO:
Touch Keyboard, or any touch key, they are the most annoying thing ever.
Try to act fancy Design, most Laptop today looks really bad.
Heavy like hell, I have a Mac book Pro, and it is like super hard, that hurt my back. (I have to care it to school for class.)
Cheap material, come on it is a laptop, no cheap practice please.

Thing I would say Yes:
Make it more physical. give me like a solid keyboard please, under light LED would be good, if they don't break easy.
Metal case or some strong carbon case. Make it more solid.
you know just make it lighter and have a good battery life.
Make it like a tablet would be good for me (for Art)
The Mac Book air really close to what I want. except that it run under a mac system that can be hack in 2 days and 2 mins. And it doesn't have Disk reader or writer. And the battery life are short.

That intel laptop show above looks sweet too. I like it more then the Mac book Air, except it doesn't really exist. at least, you can't get one for sure. haha

I'd like to see removable screens so you can use your laptop at home at a desk ... well, if we are talking the future- holograms would be nice. maybe a laptop becomes a little ball or block with a holographic display and a laser keyboard (or something better) shining the keyboard on any surface in front of you.

Ever seen that film... what was it...

Oh yes, First $20 Million is always the Hardest (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280674/).

I think it would be pretty cool to have something like that.
A small test-tube sized computer with a projection like screen and an infra-red sensor to detect where you hands are above it.

It would have to be Linux, of course!

I'd like low spec (~eee?) laptop with a "digital paper" screen and long battery time.

On current technology, I think the HP mini (http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/107817,hps-mininote-best-laptop-under-1000.aspx)is pretty close to what I want - a decent sub-notebook. If the processor has a bit more grunt, it would be perfect.

The key for me is a small, rugged and functional notetaking, email, web browsing and presentation machine for the road and being able to dock it with a fullsize screen and keyboard back at the office. SSD storage is fine with me. I don't really have any need for DVD-R on the road. A slim, external CD reader would be sufficient.

In the next generation I'd really like to see a removable screen that could act as a PDA/smartphone in its own right.

Oh, and a button that turns it into a fullsize Mazeratti. That would be cool!
:)

Pretty much like the macbook air except with more ports and multi touch built into the screen. And I don't think they'll use too much glossy black finish, finger smudges would show too easily.

Here's something that could be interesting:

Like someone stated above you could have it project onto another screen, etc.

OR...Utilizing this power:
http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news-betavoltaic-10.1.html

You could let your computer stay on...nonstop. Add another one of these batteries to the screen and you can detach it and utilize bluetooth so that you can have the keyboard part in your lap while the screen is in a more comfortable place.

I like the OLED idea...it would save so much power over the LCD screens.

Hrmm...maybe we could draw up our ideas and pitch them to some struggling company...just a thought. :P

I heard Microsoft was working towards eliminating the keyboard and mouse from the user interface, replacing them with touch screens, voice recognition, and perhaps video feedback. That would actually be quite useful for the average user (though obviously not for a programmer).

Here are my ideas for a simple tablet style PC. The goal here is to eliminate almost all mechanical parts, increase battery life, and to design a PC based on the idea in the above paragraph.

13"-15" multitouch, pressure-sensitive screen with removeable tactile key ridge overlay
Software keyboard will line up with the ridges and will only respond to "key presses" with sufficient pressure applied.
Screen protection in the form of a bound padded cover. Cover would double as a stand with 340-degree flexibility.
When not held in the arm, laptop can be stood up vertically or laid in a semi-raised position on a surface (eg, no restricted airflow).
High efficiency CPU, underclocked for increased battery life and lower heat output. Preferably use a one that doesn't require a fan.
All the required parts for a functional PC: RAM, northbridge, southbridge, video, sound
Include wireless hardware: 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, maybe UWB
SDD storage, at least 64GB worth.
Multi flash card reader
No optical drive
Built-in webcam, microphone
Possible plug-in points: 2 USB ports, Head/Microphone ports, DVI out, DC in.
1/2" (12.7 mm) thick, not including the padded cover.

The price would be anywhere between $1500 and $4000, depending on when it's built.

You mean like a Toshiba Portege R500?
Cheaper and better than a mac Air......

All great ideas, but I still game on my laptop. I like low heat output, longer battery life, lower weight, and sturdy material.

I like the idea of turning of certain components. Wi-Fi isn't the only thing draining power.

I'm hoping that in the next 3 years or so, that we have a 13.3" laptop that drains about 8 watts of power at idle, and an insane 20 watts at full load. On a nine cell battery, that would give you 6 hours of battery life, even if you ran the thing non-stop.

A tiny motherboard would be great too. Just have air in there, or put someone usefull in there, such as another, small battery, that the laptop would use when you are downloading overnight.

My ideal laptop would have a pipe rack and cupholder. I don't smoke a pipe, but I might one day, and til then, I'd like to display my collection of pipes on my laptop. Pipes make people look intelligent.

I'd also like a ketchup dispenser as well. Sick and tired of ordering food and forgetting to go pick some tomato sauce from near the till. I'd like a built in stapler also.

A pull out tape measure might be handy as well. For measuring things. I'd also like a magnifying screen thats completely see through, but only from my view not the anyone viewing the other side. that way I could zoom in on people across the cafe or wherever i happen to be sitting, and they'd think I was just doing some work on my laptop. The zoom feature could be activated with CTRL and arrow keys. It would be very handy for zooming in on ladies in the summer. Not that I would ever do that.

What about Tablet PC styles? Both has keyboard and touchscreen.
