I'm sick of Freecell, Mahjong, kloski, and the other default installed games. I hate shooters and I'm FreeCiv ed out.

I want a simple game that takes like 5 or 10 minutes to play. Any suggestions?

Into a terminal, type "apt-cache search game". Loads of results :)

Learn (http://www.gokgs.com/tutorial/1.html) Go and play on the 9x9 board. :) Quarry and GnuGo can be found in the repository, which will do just fine for this purpose. 9x9 games only take a few minutes.

I agree, frozen bubbles is great! Also, you may want to try enigma. :)

Enigma will drive you mad with its addictive powers. Kongregate.com has some good games (but also some junk). I know that you've played the default GNOME games, but Tetravex is great.

Thank you! I had been looking for a good GnuGo gui, and Quarry fits the bill perfectly.

just imagine you are hugging everybody on screen instead of shooting them up.

maybe somebody could create an expansion for those games which transforms the guns into gifts and instead of people "dying", they get "loved" and fall asleep?

Wow some cool ones for sure.

Yes I've checked out the games in the repos. Its just so overwhelming the number of games there. Its nice to get some recommendations.

I guess what I really like are simple strategy games, stuff I can go a bit brain dead with.

So keep them coming :)

Not sure this is really simple: Nethack. Don't get misled by its interface. Once you learn how to play, you will love that too.
You will need to read the manual at least to get an idea of the basic commands. Nethack is a legend in the gaming world.

It's not the violence in shooters that bothers me - I just find them repetitive and dull.

Crimson Fields is a good strategy game - it just needs more levels.

I started playing puzzle quest a couple of weeks ago.. very addictive. not sure if it plays under wine though.

Have you ever tried playing System Shock 2 or Deus Ex?? Trust me.. they are not dull. But I know what you mean.. stuff like Quake or Halo is very lame in my eyes.

if you're into civ-style games, you may also like alpha centauri http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Alpha_Centauri

not free, but it does have a linux client.

If I'm bored with the games I've currently got.
I usually go here. (http://www.happypenguin.org/)
Look at what there is to pick from on the main page, and pick a random one that'll interest me.

halo is one of the best game ever made. Though I would also put
Deus Ex on this list
